Grande voix de la presse yiddish \u00e0 New York pendant 35 ans (entre son immigration en 1908 et sa mort en 1943), Chaim Zhitlowsky mena une r\u00e9flexion approfondie sur l\u2019assimilation juive dans le contexte am\u00e9ricain, ses dangers et les solutions possibles. Peu \u00e9tudi\u00e9es jusqu\u2019\u00e0 maintenant, les positions de Zhitlowsky et son activit\u00e9 journalistique d\u00e9voilent une int\u00e9ressante perspective sur la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 juive am\u00e9ricaine de l\u2019\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecture: Chaim Zhitlowsky\u2019s Yiddishist Antipathy to the American Melting Pot<\/b><\/h2>\n

A cartoon appearing in a Yiddish humor magazine in New York in 1909 portrayed Chaim Zhitlowsky (1865-1943) as a nursemaid for the New York Yiddish intelligentsia, bottle-feeding it with carefully curated edification by means of the highbrow journal he founded, <\/span>Dos naye lebn<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 Indeed, Zhitlowsky\u2019s was a significant voice in the New York Yiddish press during the 35 years from his immigration in 1908 until his death in 1943 \u2013 half his life \u2013 and yet his activity in the American sphere has been little researched.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reyze Turner<\/strong> recently completed a master\u2019s degree in Yiddish at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and at the Paris Yiddish Center she teaches, among other things, a course about the historical Yiddish press for advanced intermediate students.\u00a0 She will speak to us about her research into Zhitlowsky\u2019s perspectives, expressed in the New York Yiddish press, on Jewish assimilation in the American context, its dangers, and his proposed remedy: \u201cprogressive Jewish nationalism\u201d combined with political Yiddishism.<\/span><\/p>\n
