Dans le cadre de la saison\u00a0Paris-Berlin, un trait d\u2019union pour la diaspora yiddish<\/strong><\/p>\n

Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1930, \u00e0 Berlin, en Allemagne, un groupe d’intellectuels juifs d’Europe de l’Est se lance dans un projet visant \u00e0 transformer la vie de millions de juifs yiddishophones dans le monde. Leur objectif est de publier une encyclop\u00e9die populaire\u00a0 <\/span>de connaissances g\u00e9n\u00e9rales en langue yiddish, l\u2019 Algemeyne entsiklopedye<\/i> (Encyclop\u00e9die g\u00e9n\u00e9rale), qui servirait de pont vers le monde moderne et de guide pour aider ses lecteurs \u00e0 s’y orienter. Peu apr\u00e8s sa cr\u00e9ation, l’arriv\u00e9e au pouvoir d’Hitler contraint ses r\u00e9dacteurs \u00e0 s’enfuir \u00e0 Paris. La port\u00e9e et la mission du projet changeront \u00e0 plusieurs reprises avant que les derniers volumes ne soient publi\u00e9s \u00e0 New York en 1966.<\/p>\n

Professeur d’histoire juive \u00e0 l’universit\u00e9 Wake Forest (\u00c9tats Unis), Barry Trachtenberg<\/strong> est l’auteur de The Holocaust & the Exile of Yiddish : A History of the Algemeyne Entsiklopedye<\/i> (Rutgers, 2022). Il retracera la saga complexe de l’Algemeyne entsiklopedye<\/em> et de ses r\u00e9dacteurs alors que leur principal public, les Juifs d’Europe de l’Est, \u00e9tait confront\u00e9 \u00e0 la pers\u00e9cution et au g\u00e9nocide, puis au d\u00e9fi de se r\u00e9installer dans les premi\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies qui ont suivi la seconde guerre mondiale. \u00c0 travers le destin de l\u2019ouvrage se dessinent les controverses ayant le monde juif ainsi que l\u2019enjeu de la continuit\u00e9 de la culture yiddish et de sa voie vers l\u2019avenir.<\/p>\n

In the early 1930s in Berlin, Germany, a group of leading Eastern European Jewish intellectuals embarked upon a project to transform the lives of millions of Yiddish-speaking Jews around the world. Their goal was to publish a popular and comprehensive Yiddish language encyclopedia of general knowledge that would serve as a bridge to the modern world and as a guide to help its readers navigate their way within it. However, soon after the\u00a0Algemeyne entsiklopedye\u00a0(General Encyclopedia) was announced, Hitler\u2019s rise to power forced its editors to flee to Paris. The scope and mission of the project repeatedly changed before its final volumes were published in New York City in 1966.
\nThe Holocaust & the Exile of Yiddish<\/i>\u00a0untangles the complicated saga of the\u00a0Algemeyne entsiklopedye<\/i>\u00a0and its editors. The editors continued to publish volumes and revise the encyclopedia\u2019s mission while their primary audience, Eastern European Jews, faced persecution and genocide under Nazi rule, and the challenge of reestablishing themselves in the first decades after World War II. Historian Barry Trachtenberg reveals how, over the course of the middle decades of the twentieth century, the project sparked tremendous controversy in Jewish cultural and political circles, which debated what the purpose of a Yiddish encyclopedia should be, as well as what knowledge and perspectives it should contain. Nevertheless, this is not only a story about destruction and trauma, but also one of tenacity and continuity, as the encyclopedia\u2019s compilers strove to preserve the heritage of Yiddish culture, to document its near-total extermination in the Holocaust, and to chart its path into the future.<\/p>\n

Barry Trachtenberg<\/strong> is the Rubin Presidential Chair of Jewish History and Professor of History at Wake Forest University.\u00a0He is the author of three books,\u00a0The Holocaust & the Exile of Yiddish: A History of the Algemeyne Entsiklopedye\u00a0(Rutgers, 2022),\u00a0The United States and the Nazi Holocaust: Race, Refuge, and Remembrance\u00a0(Bloomsbury, 2018), and\u00a0The Revolutionary Roots of Modern Yiddish, 1903-1917\u00a0(Syracuse, 2008). He serves on the Board of Scholars of Facing History and Ourselves and the Academic Advisory Board of Jewish Voice for Peace.<\/p>\n
