Plaque tournante entre l’Est et l’Ouest, Berlin a \u00e9t\u00e9 un lieu de refuge et de transit pour des dizaines de milliers de Juifs d’Europe de l’Est depuis la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle, mais surtout apr\u00e8s la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. Arrivant pour la plupart de Russie, de Lituanie et de Galicie, fuyant la guerre, les pogroms ou la r\u00e9volution, ils ont favoris\u00e9 l’\u00e9panouissement de la culture juive \u00e0 Berlin.<\/p>\n

De mars \u00e0 juillet 2012, le Mus\u00e9e juif de Berlin, en coop\u00e9ration avec la Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin, avait organis\u00e9 l\u2019exposition Berlin Transit<\/i> pour rendre compte du r\u00f4le particulier jou\u00e9 par la ville lors des migrations juives de l\u2019entre-deux-guerres. Les six salles th\u00e9matiques ne suivaient pas un r\u00e9cit chronologique mais traitaient chacune d\u2019une th\u00e9matique illustr\u00e9e par diff\u00e9rents types d\u2019objets et de documents tels que photos, livres, enregistrements audio, souvenirs de famille, peintures et films.<\/p>\n

Ancienne collaboratrice scientifique \u00e0 la chaire d’histoire de l’Europe centrale et orientale de l’Universit\u00e9 libre de Berlin (2005-2012), Anne-Christin Sa\u00df<\/strong> a \u00e9t\u00e9 l’une des commissaires de Berlin Transit<\/i>. Elle expliquera le concept de l\u2019exposition et le choix des objets qui peuvent repr\u00e9senter un ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne aussi \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re que la culture yiddish dans le Berlin de Weimar.<\/p>\n

As a hub between East and West, Berlin had been a place of refuge and stopover for tens of thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe since the end of the 19th century, but especially after the First World War. Most of them came as war, pogrom or revolutionary refugees from Russia, Lithuania and Galicia. For a good decade, the city became a centre of Jewish migration in Europe. Diversely networked and at home in several languages, the immigrants brought about a blossoming of Jewish culture in Berlin. Many of the Jewish migrants lived in the Scheunenviertel, near Alexanderplatz, others in bourgeois Charlottenburg, which was also called \u00ab\u00a0Charlottengrad\u00a0\u00bb because of the high proportion of Russians in the population.<\/p>\n

In six thematic rooms and an epilogue, the exhibition focused on the immigration and onward migration of Jewish emigrants and refugees from Eastern Europe between the two world wars. The thematic rooms, however, did not follow a chronological narrative, but were characterised by different object genres such as photos, books, audio, family memorabilia, paintings and film. In one of the exhibition rooms, the diversity of this \u00ab\u00a0Babylon in Berlin\u00a0\u00bb was made audible to the visitors through recorded literary and autobiographical texts in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew and German and thus made directly tangible.<\/p>\n

The lecture will focus on the exhibition concept and the question of which objects can be used to present such a fleeting phenomenon as Yiddish culture in Weimar Berlin.<\/p>\n

Dr Anne-Christin Sa\u00df<\/strong> was a \u00ab\u00a0wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin\u00a0\u00bb at the Chair of Eastern and Central European History at the Free University Berlin (2005-2012) and one of the curators of the exhibition \u201cBerlin Transit\u201d.
