Plaque tournante entre l’Est et l’Ouest, Berlin a été un lieu de refuge et de transit pour des dizaines de milliers de Juifs d’Europe de l’Est depuis la fin du XIXe siècle, mais surtout après la Première Guerre mondiale. Arrivant pour la plupart de Russie, de Lituanie et de Galicie, fuyant la guerre, les pogroms ou la révolution, ils ont favorisé l’épanouissement de la culture juive à Berlin.

De mars à juillet 2012, le Musée juif de Berlin, en coopération avec la Freie Universität Berlin, avait organisé l’exposition Berlin Transit pour rendre compte du rôle particulier joué par la ville lors des migrations juives de l’entre-deux-guerres. Les six salles thématiques ne suivaient pas un récit chronologique mais traitaient chacune d’une thématique illustrée par différents types d’objets et de documents tels que photos, livres, enregistrements audio, souvenirs de famille, peintures et films.

Ancienne collaboratrice scientifique à la chaire d’histoire de l’Europe centrale et orientale de l’Université libre de Berlin (2005-2012), Anne-Christin Saß a été l’une des commissaires de Berlin Transit. Elle expliquera le concept de l’exposition et le choix des objets qui peuvent représenter un phénomène aussi éphémère que la culture yiddish dans le Berlin de Weimar.

As a hub between East and West, Berlin had been a place of refuge and stopover for tens of thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe since the end of the 19th century, but especially after the First World War. Most of them came as war, pogrom or revolutionary refugees from Russia, Lithuania and Galicia. For a good decade, the city became a centre of Jewish migration in Europe. Diversely networked and at home in several languages, the immigrants brought about a blossoming of Jewish culture in Berlin. Many of the Jewish migrants lived in the Scheunenviertel, near Alexanderplatz, others in bourgeois Charlottenburg, which was also called « Charlottengrad » because of the high proportion of Russians in the population.

In six thematic rooms and an epilogue, the exhibition focused on the immigration and onward migration of Jewish emigrants and refugees from Eastern Europe between the two world wars. The thematic rooms, however, did not follow a chronological narrative, but were characterised by different object genres such as photos, books, audio, family memorabilia, paintings and film. In one of the exhibition rooms, the diversity of this « Babylon in Berlin » was made audible to the visitors through recorded literary and autobiographical texts in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew and German and thus made directly tangible.

The lecture will focus on the exhibition concept and the question of which objects can be used to present such a fleeting phenomenon as Yiddish culture in Weimar Berlin.

Dr Anne-Christin Saß was a « wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin » at the Chair of Eastern and Central European History at the Free University Berlin (2005-2012) and one of the curators of the exhibition “Berlin Transit”.
