Un dessin satirique imprimé dans un magazine humoristique yiddish à New York en 1909 représente le philosophe influent Chaim Zhitlowsky (1865-1943), cet adversaire du « melting pot », en nounou allaitant l’intelligentsia juive de New York aux idées prônées dans Dos naye lebn, le journal de haut niveau qu’il avait fondé.

Grande voix de la presse yiddish à New York pendant 35 ans (entre son immigration en 1908 et sa mort en 1943), Chaim Zhitlowsky mena une réflexion approfondie sur l’assimilation juive dans le contexte américain, ses dangers et les solutions possibles. Peu étudiées jusqu’à maintenant, les positions de Zhitlowsky et son activité journalistique dévoilent une intéressante perspective sur la société juive américaine de l’époque.

Reyze Turner, récemment diplômée de l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem (Master de yiddish ) s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux trésors de la presse yiddish, matière qu’elle enseigne, entre autres, à la Maison de la culture yiddish – Bibliothèque Medem à Paris.

Lecture: Chaim Zhitlowsky’s Yiddishist Antipathy to the American Melting Pot

A cartoon appearing in a Yiddish humor magazine in New York in 1909 portrayed Chaim Zhitlowsky (1865-1943) as a nursemaid for the New York Yiddish intelligentsia, bottle-feeding it with carefully curated edification by means of the highbrow journal he founded, Dos naye lebn.  Indeed, Zhitlowsky’s was a significant voice in the New York Yiddish press during the 35 years from his immigration in 1908 until his death in 1943 – half his life – and yet his activity in the American sphere has been little researched.  

Reyze Turner recently completed a master’s degree in Yiddish at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and at the Paris Yiddish Center she teaches, among other things, a course about the historical Yiddish press for advanced intermediate students.  She will speak to us about her research into Zhitlowsky’s perspectives, expressed in the New York Yiddish press, on Jewish assimilation in the American context, its dangers, and his proposed remedy: “progressive Jewish nationalism” combined with political Yiddishism.
