Bone of My Bone: Discovering Forgotten Yiddish Women’s Poetry Through Song

Reyze Turner, a Yiddish teacher at the Paris Yiddish Center since 2018 and a translator from Yiddish to English, takes a particular interest in “digging up” forgotten Yiddish literary and journalistic texts and finding a place for them in the present-day context. Since 2014, when she was studying for a cantorial certificate at Hebrew College, in Boston, Massachusetts, she has been engaged in this pursuit also within a musical framework, by composing melodies for little-known Yiddish poems written by women. In Paris, she made the acquaintance of two fantastic collaborators, Nicolas Dupin, composer and violinist, and Bastien Hartmann, pianist. Apart from a difficult pandemic-intermission, they have now been working together on this project since 2019. They will present the fruits of their collaboration: nine new songs, based on short texts written by Yiddish women poets.

At the end of the presentation, audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions. The presentation will mostly be in Yiddish, but the Q&A will be trilingual.  Registrants will receive the nine poetic texts in advance, together with transliteration and translation into French and English.

The registration system will close 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the event.
