Fondé en 2012, le Semer Ensemble, basé à Berlin, se consacre à la réinterprétation d’œuvres musicales enregistrées par des artistes juifs pendant la période nazie sous le label berlinois Semer. Détruit par les nazis en 1938, l’ensemble du catalogue Semer, composé de centaines d’enregistrements précieux et uniques, était considéré comme perdu à jamais jusqu’à ce qu’il soit redécouvert au début des années 2000.

Dirigé par Alan Bern, le Semer Ensemble réunit une extraordinaire brochette d’artistes de la musique yiddish, dont Lorin Sklamberg, Daniel Kahn, Sasha Lurje, Mark Kovnatskiy, Paul Brody, Martin Lillich et Fabian Schnedler.

Alan Bern contera l’histoire étonnante du label Semer, partagera avec les auditeurs des enregistrements originaux des artistes du label datant des années 1930, ainsi que des vidéos de performances récentes du Semer Ensemble.

Compositeur, pianiste, accordéoniste, enseignant, installé à Berlin depuis 1987, Alan Bern est internationalement reconnu pour ses contributions à la recherche, à la diffusion et au renouvellement créatif de la musique juive. Il a reçu plusieurs prix pour son travail.

Dr. Alan Bern (Bloomington, Indiana, 1955) is an American Jewish composer, pianist, accordionist, educator and cultural activist, based in Berlin since 1987. He is the founding artistic director of Yiddish Summer Weimar and the Other Music Academy (OMA). He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the research, dissemination and creative renewal of Jewish music with Brave Old World, The Other Europeans and the Semer Ensemble, among others. For his work he has been awared the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Weimar Prize, among others. 

Founded in 2012, the Berlin-based Semer Ensemble is dedicated reinterpreting music recorded by Jewish artists during the Nazi period on the almost unknown Berlin-based Semer record label. Destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, the entire Semer catalogue of hundreds of precious, unique recordings was considered lost forever until it was rediscovered in the early 2000s. Led by Alan Bern, the Semer Ensemble features an extraordinary lineup of Yiddish music artists, including Lorin Sklamberg, Daniel Kahn, Sasha Lurje, Mark Kovnatskiy, Paul Brody, Martin Lillich and Fabian Schnedler. www.semerensemble.com
